Pornography

Briefly explained

Pornography is always only one click away – on the phone, late at night, in a hidden tab. For many men it began in their youth, often by chance, and slowly became a habit. Over time it can take more: more time, more extreme content, more secrecy. It isolates us, shapes how we see women, our wives and ourselves, and makes real closeness harder.

Do you recognise yourself?

  • Do you watch pornography more often or for longer than you planned?
  • Do you delete your browser history or use hidden apps and private tabs?
  • Are you looking for more extreme content than before?
  • Do you lose sleep, time or work because of it?
  • Do you see women around you more as bodies than as persons?
  • Has it come between you and your wife or partner?

If you answered yes to some of these questions, you are not alone, and there is hope.

A spiritual view

Every picture on the screen shows a real person, made in the image of God – someone’s son or daughter, with a story, a soul and a dignity of their own. Lust takes; love gives. Jesus teaches that purity reaches the eyes and the inner life, not only outward acts. Guarding our eyes is not a prison. It is a fence around a garden we want to keep safe.

Practical protection

  • Install a filter and accountability software on every device, and let a trusted person hold the password. Examples: Covenant Eyes, Accountable2You or Ever Accountable (filter and accountability partner), or a free filter such as CleanBrowsing. On the iPhone, Screen Time can also block adult websites. We are not affiliated with any of these programs.
  • Decide on clear times and places for internet use, and keep them even when things go well.
  • Keep the phone out of the bedroom and the bathroom at night.
  • Know your weak moments (late evening, alone, tired) and add extra protection there.
  • When the urge comes: get up, change rooms, pray, pick up the phone.
